How to beat Back Pain

Do you suffer with back pain?  Do you find that activities are becoming a greater challenge because your muscles and joints won’t move as freely as they once did?  You’re not alone, it is estimated 540 million people around the world suffer with lower back pain.  This is a major health issue and according to The Lancet “most back pain sufferers are treated in the same manner that is not consistent with best practice treatment guidelines.”

Is there a solution to this epidemic?  Is it possible to increase mobility, reduce pain and improve our quality of life?  Do you feel you have tried everything and nothing seems to work?  I hear the last comment all the time when clients visit me for the first time in clinic.  If I told you that I could teach you how to reduce pain, increase mobility and help you return to a better quality of life, would you be interested to know more?  If so, please read on….

Why are people getting stiffer, tighter and in pain?

People use to say that pain, stiffness, stooping and musculo-skeletal problems were associated with old age.  This theory is now being disproved by many health care professionals.  We are now seeing it across all age ranges, including youngsters.

Have you notice youngsters walking around with a hunched posture, looking very tight through their shoulders?  I am seeing more youngsters in my clinical practice for neck and back pain.  Why?  Because due to habitual behaviours such as slouching over a mobile device, books, playing computer games and resting their elbows on their knees or working at the computer, they are creating chronically tight muscles in certain areas of their body.  This is leading to musculo-skeletal complaints that are occurring earlier than previous generations.

Back pain and stiffness occur for a number of reasons but 70-90% of sufferers will have pain which they carry around everyday.  It is the sort which is not going to lead to back surgery, instead it is the type of back pain that limits their quality of life because they fear the pain will increase if they move too much.

Movement and Pain

Australian Pain scientists such as Dr David Butler and Professor Lorimer Moseley are now producing lots of research to show that movement is key to reducing pain, increasing mobility and enhancing one’s quality of life.  Somatic Movement is also proving to reduce pain and increase mobility with people who develop a regular somatic movement practise.  Somatic movement involves a 3 step process called PANDICULATION.  The process allows chronically tight muscles to relax and reset their length so people can move freely.  Mindfulness techniques are combined with somatic movement to help you heighten your awareness to the practise and carry the principles to every day activities.  This allows a shift in old habits and the creation of new healthy habits which will stop you returning to the actions and postures which triggered your pain.

Would you like to learn how to reduce pain in your back?  Are you determined to take back control of your health and well being? Have you considered practising Somatic Movement to gain these results?

Somatic Movement

Somatic Movement has been a wonderful life skill people have embraced and their regular practise allows them to live a life to their full potential, improving their mobility and reducing their back pain.  Our mind and body are constantly bombarded with pressures and stress.  These pressures and stress have to go somewhere.  We may internalise our stress which may result in digestive and reproductive health issues.  We may think we deal with stress quite well, however have you notice times when your back, neck and shoulders become tight and painful from an intense situation?  This is not coincidental.  Your mind and body work very closely together.  The one influences the other and vise versa.  If we are unaware of how stress impacts on our mind and body, then we will continue to live in a body and mind which is highly strung, hypersensitive to people and environments and full of tension.  All of which is being held subconsciously or under our unconscious control.

Somatic Movement helps you break these detrimental subconscious or unconscious actions, postures and behaviour.  Once you start practising Somatic movement, you will notice how much your subconscious mind likes to hold muscles very tight.  Quite quickly you start to understand why your body has been operating in a certain way for so long.  As soon as a stressful event is presented to you, you have greater awareness of how your mind and body are dealing with the situation.  With a greater awareness to your somatic health, quite quickly, you can stop the subconscious stress responses from taking charge in your mind and body.  Instead, with the skills you are taught in the Total Somatics online program (www.TotalSomatics.com), you start using the portions of your brain required for focus, awareness, concentration, decision making and emotional intelligence.

As a result, you start living consciously and reduce the stress response taking hold in your body.
