Hydrating Your Body

As our goal to live a some somatic or holistic lifestyle involves good nutrition and water consumption, lets look at some reasons for staying hydrated.

 water and somtics

Energy levels

Water is crucial for the body.  Dehydration causes the enzyme activity in your body to slow down.  This has an impact on your energy levels; causing tiredness and fatigue.

Skin Health

The skin is the largest organ of the body.  When we become dehydrated, it affects the elimination of waste and toxins through the skin.  This can lead to skin complaints such as eczema and psoriasis.  Drinking plenty of water will also help reduce premature ageing of the skin.

Digestive Health

A well hydrated body will help with eliminating digested food through the colon with ease.  A dehydrated bowel will cause the stools to become sticky and travel along the colon with great difficulty.  This can lead to constipation.  A shortage of water and alkaline minerals such as magnesium and calcium can lead to a number of digestive complaints such as acid reflux, gastritis and ulcers.

Cholesterol levels

Dehydration will cause the body to produce more cholesterol in order to prevent water loss from the cells.

Joint Health

Did you know that cartilage padding is composed of mainly water?  When you become dehydrated, the cartilage weakens.  This affects the joint and will slow its action of repair and maintenance. As a result, pain and discomfort can be felt.

Bladder & Kidney Health

By keeping hydrated, the bladder and kidneys are flushed regularly.  Imagine if you didn’t flush your toilet regularly!  The aromas would not be pleasant and the environment would start to attract flies and other unhygienic creatures!  It’s the same with our body.  If we don’t regularly flush our kidneys and bladder with water consumption, an accumulation of toxins and acid waste will create a perfect environment for bacteria to flourish.  This has consequences, in the form of kidney stones and bladder infections.
