Words have Power

Words have always played a crucial role in human history, from the written and spoken word to sign language. Whatever your method, words carry a lot of weight. In this week’s blog we are going to consider the power of your words and how they can impact on you.

Your amazing mind

Words have created wars and peace around the world over the years. They are powerful and will affect many people as a result. However we are going to consider how words from within, your internal dialogue and how you perceive the world can have a huge effect on your somatic health (mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health).

People marvel at the advancements in science and technology, which of course are fantastic, however you all possess something even more awe inspiring, your brain. Your brain is truly amazing. Within your brain you have what is known as the conscious and subconscious mind. Your subconscious mind far exceeds even the most complicated of medical devices. As you read this, your subconscious has said “I’ve got this all under control.” Your subconscious continues to keep command of your heart rate, breath rate, hormonal secretions, digestive function and filtering your senses so you do not become overwhelmed with every single noise around you.

However if you are a regular reader of my blogs, you will know that as a Clinical Somatic Educator, I like to reveal the very close connection between our mind and body. They cannot be separated. In Somatics we refer to the mind and body as the SOMA.

A Soma is a sensory organism that is shaped and moulded by experiences, habits, injuries, emotional events, cultural and social beliefs. As truly amazing and intricately made as we are, we are also quite vulnerable if we are unaware of how to truly care and nurture our soma. Within The Total Somatics Approach to Health & Wellness Online Program at www.TotalSomatics.com, I discuss how Somatic Movement alone is not enough to create long term lifestyle changes. Somatic Movement is very powerful, however when we consider other areas discussed in detail within the Online program, you can create massive leaps in your somatic health and wellbeing. Let me explain more about your amazing soma.

The relationship between your Conscious & Subconscious mind

Your subconscious mind shows up in your ‘body.’ The habits, injuries, beliefs and experiences we have had up until today reflect in how we move, stand, breathe, sit and behave. Your subconscious mind never clocks off, it works 24 hours, 7 days a week.

Your conscious mind is the reasoning mind, for instance, you use your conscious mind to choose your life partner, your home, the movie you want to watch and the books you want to read. So within one mind, we have two different actions happening. This is where the two spheres of activity start to intertwine. Whatever your conscious mind believes to be true becomes impressed and accepted into your subconscious mind. If you recall, the conscious mind reasons whereas your subconscious mind does not reason or argue the point. It just accepts it. If you have ever planted something, you can relate to this. Your subconscious mind is a fertile soil and your conscious mind is the seed. Yet this seed could either be a weed or tomato plant. The weed seed will choke and affect the growth of plants and vegetables around it. Whereas if you plant the tomato seed in to fertile soil and continue to nourish and safeguard that seed, gorgeous fat, juicy, sweet tomatoes will flourish!

Have you ever experienced times where an event is very stressful and you have reverted to your old habits or patterns of behaviour? Could it be anger? Could it be you become withdrawn and quiet? Do you become over reactive and hyper sensitive? When these reactions occur, your subjective mind which is your subconscious mind has kicked into the situation. Your subconscious mind with deeply impressed emotions and life experiences have been triggered by the event. This is a sign that you must be more vigilant with your conscious mind because what you think about every day, your habitual thoughts, creates deep impressions in your subconscious mind. The way you react to situations, highlights the type of seed (conscious mind) you have planted in your fertile soil (subconscious mind).

My favourite quote which is very apt to this description comes from Dr Wayne Dyer,

“It all begins with how you choose to think. When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”

Nobody is perfect and at different times in your life you will have wobbly moments. However when you become somatic, you notice everything and this is one of the main areas you can see and work with. If you have noticed that your anxiety, ruminating negative accounts from your past, bitterness, anger, resentment, jealousy, injustice or another form of thinking has sprouted, remember you are the gardener, you can pull that weed out! When you become somatically aware, you will notice how your habits are creeping back in. By changing the way your conscious mind feeds your subconscious mind, you can germinate a healthy head space which creates empowering, upbuilding, constructive thoughts, words and intentions.

Your conscious mind is a bodyguard at the door of your subconscious mind. It is very protective of what filters into this powerful and amazing action within your mind. Your subconscious mind is very sensitive to suggestion. So knowing that how we talk, what we read, what we listen to and who we associate with, which are all taken in by our conscious mind, will have a profound effect on whether our subconscious mind sprouts productive or damaging greenery from the figurative soil.

Perception

Your subconscious mind can be impressed with a negative, dis-empowering comment made by a well meaning health professional. The power of their words could actually create a moment of helplessness or despondency. You may feel after leaving the health professional’s office that you are “fine” however the deep emotional response with dis-empowering expressions such as “you’ll need surgery in .…..” or “Your back is solid and highly inflamed,” creates a subconscious belief that begins to affect your internal environment at a visceral level. Anxiety, apprehension and pain perception increases because the words feed from your conscious mind to your subconscious mind and it becomes fertile. However, the more you practise standing back from the situation and becoming objective, rather than subjective, you can question these limiting beliefs. That is where The Total Somatics Approach to Health & Wellness Online Program comes into play. Within the Program, there is a lot of support material to educate and empower you, so you can take back control of the quality of your life. When you educate yourself, your conscious mind is taking in this knowledge and with application, you feel empowered because your subconscious mind is experiencing freedom, happiness and good health.
