The Sleep Switch: Reprogramming Your Body and Mind for Deep Rest

Hello! How are you? xx I hope you are having a lovely week. Is it me, or do the weeks seem to be going very fast towards the end of the year?!

In today's blog and podcast, we are going to consider something crucial to all of us. SLEEP. Sleep is not something we force. It’s something we allow. Yet in our modern world, our nervous system rarely gets the memo. Many people struggle with falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking feeling unrefreshed, not because their body is broken, but because their nervous system is stuck in old patterns of tension, stress, and hypervigilance.

In this week’s episode of the Somatic Movement & Mindset Podcast, we explore The Sleep Switch, your body’s built-in mechanism for turning off excessive tension, calming your mind, and creating the ideal internal environment for deep, restorative rest.

This topic beautifully connects with the message of my TEDx talk, Pandiculation: The Natural Solution to Chronic Pain and Discomfort, because the same principles that release chronic pain also unlock healthier, deeper sleep.

If you haven’t watched the TEDx talk yet, I highly encourage you to do so, especially if sleep, pain, or chronic tension affect your life. It’s a powerful insight into how your brain and body can reset naturally.

5 key insights from this week’s podcast episode

1. Your nervous system holds the master key to sleep

Deep rest is impossible when your nervous system is stuck in “go, go, go mode.”
Years of stress, posture habits, unresolved tension, and emotional strain keep your brain in a protective state, even after you crawl into bed.
When we re-educate the nervous system using somatic techniques, we flip the sleep switch back on.

2. Pandiculation resets the brain’s tension levels, naturally

In my TEDx talk, I explain how pandiculation is the body’s built-in system to recalibrate muscles and release chronic contraction.
This natural neuromuscular reset prepares the body for deeper rest because your brain finally feels safe to “let go.”
If your body is holding tension from the day (or from the last 20 years plus), sleep becomes lighter and more fragmented. Pandiculation changes that.

3. Slow, mindful movement down-regulates an overstimulated mind

Many people try to calm their mind at night, but their body is still in high alert.

When you move slowly and somatically, you communicate safety to the brain:
“You can relax now. You’re safe.”

This creates the perfect internal environment for drifting into sleep rather than chasing it.

4. Your breath becomes deeper and more rhythmic when the ribs and spine are released

Rigid ribs = shallow breathing.
Shallow breathing = wired brain.

Through Clinical Somatic movement, especially releasing the ribcage and diaphragm, your breathing becomes naturally slower and more rhythmic, the exact pattern needed for the body to enter deep parasympathetic rest.

5. You can train your body to sleep better, at any age

Poor sleep is not a life sentence.
Your brain’s neuroplasticity allows you to retrain the patterns that prevent deep rest, whether those patterns come from injury, trauma, stress, lifestyle, or simple habit.

Your body is always listening.
You can teach it to sleep again.

My TEDx talk, Pandiculation: The Natural Solution to Chronic Pain and Discomfort, shows exactly how the brain gets stuck in chronic tension and how to reverse it through gentle, natural movement.

When you release the tension that your body is holding all day, you don’t have to fight for sleep.
Sleep happens naturally.
