Somatics for Office Workers

Recently I was approached by the CEO of an online business called Bar Opener. He asked me if Somatics could be useful for office workers and people who spend large amounts of time working within the world of ecommerce. In the last few decades we have seen the amazing advancements in technology and the speed of information being connected across the globe. However with this advancements, also comes a downside - we are becoming a sedentary society. Our sedentary society has expressions such as ‘tech neck’ for the pain and change in curvature at the top of the spine due to people constantly looking down at their devices. The beautiful young muscles and joints of our younger generations are already developing musculoskeletal issues which use to affect people in their late 30s and early 40s. If you are a regular reader of my blogs, you will know that I often talk about habituation. Habituation has a huge effect on our muscles and joints from the daily rituals we create. When we repeat the same movements, postures, actions and emotional mindset on a daily basis, we begin to change the level of tension within our muscles. The muscles have sensory neurons which inform the brain of the level of tension being held within the muscles. If the level of tension continues to be the same, the brain will inform the motor neurons to adjust, so that it can become “the new normal.” This adjustment occurs through adaptation, creating habituation. So overtime, quietly in the background your muscles are gradually increasing in muscle tension and causing you to live in a tighter body, unable to move so freely, creating pain and affecting your posture. It is usually only when you feel pain, that this alarm bell mechanism, as it were, alerts you to the fact that your muscles and by extension your joints, are not working as efficiently as they could be.
